Oval shaped & engraved Tortoiseshell box top; reddish amber shell intricately engraved & gilt three-toed coiled dragon flying among clouds; with fitted wooden felt lined case. Note: the Chinese made an infinite variety of tortoiseshell boxes for export during the late 18th to early 19th century, this appears to be a surviving lid of one such box. Unmarked.
This precious material was used from the later part of the 18th up to the middle of the 19th century.
Condition: tortoiseshell has split at edge with closed crack running toward center Date: dates from late 18th to early 19thc.; Case appears to be of later date, most likely mid 19th to early 20th c. Origin: Chinese with wooden case probably of European/ American origin
