Dating from the Classical Revival or American Empire period (ca 1830-80's), this figurial antique door knocker has a center design depicting the face of a mythological Olympian god (possibly the Greek messenger god, Hermes) below a curled ribbon banner; molded in high relief the god wears a winged headdress over long curly hair; the swing bail has a center oval beaded cartouche and wheat design sides; sand cast, non-magnetic and very heavy; possibly brass, however we believe this door knocker to be bronze.
Condition: original natural brown patina with evidence of a gilt plating; Old English inscription (possibly owner's name)inscribed on ribbon banner; some pitting to surface, no foundry marks. |
