This antique Victorian nail file probably was at one time part of a gentleman's dressing set; this one has a beautiful mother of pearl (abalone) shell handle. Highly prized since the 16th century, in the 19th c mother of pearl's aesthetic appeal and exotic provenances (South Seas) made it very popular and it was frequently used for handles and buttons as well as highlights for other decorative items in the Victorian home. |
