This classic antique Wedgwood Etruria Cream ware scenic John Peel pitcher or jug dates from ca. 1891-1908. (Etruria was the fourth site for the Josiah Wedgwood pottery business and was opened 1769.). The relief molded body has a fluted base, a Fox Hound form handle and two separate fox hunting scenes decorating the sides. The base is marked with the round black printed Wedgwood Etruria England mark with the image of John Peel. Condition: very good, has one (1/4 in)rim chip at lip (see image), some overall minor glaze crazing (normal for its age) no cracks or other chips.
Note: The story behind John Peel: John Peel (abt 1776-1854)was an English farmer & fox hunter who was rather famous for his drinking abilities. Dyke Ken John Peel (translation: Do You Know John Peel?) is the title to a traditional British hunt song written in 1829,in honor of John Peel. |
