During the nineteenth century, scenes based on the daily life of the Dutch became popular and this antique Wedgwood Majolica low comport or compote is a fine example. The center is decorated with an embossed Dutch water scene and is surrounded by a deep rich brown and ochre scalloped rim. The round stand rests on three modeled Ochre glazed paw form feet below draping Acanthus leaves. The underside is in a mottled glazed with stilt marks around the rim. The cream base with maker's marks including impressed (all caps) WEDGWOOD, the impressed letter 'T'; impressed partially obscured date code of 'B' or possibly 'D' and a pattern number of 'M 1426' (for ca 1873-1888) in red paint dating this piece to either ca 1873 or 1875.
Condition: very good, has one .25 inch chip on underside of rim,some scuffing to glaze in center (see images) no cracks or other chips |
